Ambuja Cements Ltd. was set up in the late 80s. The cement industry presented an
opportunity of steady growth and ethical competition to the promoters.
However, a decade later, it became one of the world’s most efficient cement companies
producing the finest cement in the world at the lowest cost. While adhering to the most
stringent international pollution-control norms.
Today, Ambuja is the 3rd largest cement company in India, with an annual plant capacity of 18
million tonnes and revenue in excess of Rs.4847 crores.
With Holcim, Switzerland, bringing in equity participation, Ambuja Cements has now become a
part of world’s largest cement and building materials producers having presence in 70 countries
across the world and a turnover of over 19 billion US dollars.
Ambuja has consistently raised the bar in all aspects of the cement industry. Be it transportation, plant efficiency, environment, brand building or human resource
development.
When Ambuja set up its first plant in 1986, the accepted time period for installing a plant was 3 years.
Ambuja, did it in less than 2 years. In 1993 the company went a step further and bettered its own record. Ambuja's second plant
was installed in a mere 13 months - the quickest time for setting up a one million tonne cement plant.
In the early 90s, almost all cement in India travelled by rail or road. And in bags. A mode that
involves deterioration of both, the quality and volume of cement.
In 1993, Ambuja Cement set up a complete system of transporting bulk cement via the sea
route.
Making it the first company in India to introduce bulk cement movement by sea. Others
followed and today, about 10% cement travels by this new route.
The facility comprises: A dedicated port at the Gujarat plants, capable of berthing 40,000 DWT
vessels, three bagging terminals at Mumbai, Surat and Sri Lanka, and seven special bulk cement
vessels.
This capability has enabled us to supply fresh cement to many coastal markets – domestic and
international.
Ambuja Cement exports almost 17% of its production in a very competitive international
environment. For the last ten years, Ambuja Cement remains India’s highest exporter of
cement.
This has been possible for two reasons –
One, the quality of cement matches the best in the world.
Two, the dedicated bulk cement transportation capability at our Gujarat plant.
The facility at the Ambuja port near Muldwarka in Saurashtra is capable of handling a loading
rate of 800-900 TPH.
Riding on the robust growth in the Indian economy, cement sector is rising at 9% pa. With
Holcim’s support, Ambuja Cements has planned to increase its capacity from the current 18
million tons to 25 million tons in the next 5 years.

Ambuja in Punjab
Ambuja Cement set up its first grinding unit near Ropar in 1995. Though, one of the fastest
growing and richest state, Punjab always depended on neighbouring Himachal and Rajasthan for its cement. Ambuja Cement developed new cement specially for Punjab by using the waste generated by the thermal power plants. Its quality was way above the other cements. Punjab had finally found best quality available on tap. As a result, Ambuja Cement became Punjab’s first choice and to meet people’s ever growing demand, Ambuja Cement set up its second plant
near Bathinda in 2001. Today, one out of four bags used in Punjab are Ambuja Cement.
Ambuja Cement has also done Punjab proud by winning the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Clean
technology in 2003. Fiercely committed to sustainable development, the plant uses bio-fuels
and recycles waste as raw materials.
The company has also contributed immensely to the economic wellbeing of the rural areas. It
has rejuvenated and set up schools and colleges, set up health centres and has helped farmers
to improve yield, harvest water. It has trained the community – especially women – to become
economically independent by encouraging the natural enterprising approach.
Ambuja Manovikas Kendra
Ambuja’s contribution to the society is best exemplified in the Ambuja Manovikas Kendra, a
school set up for mentally challenged children. Once outcast by the society these special
children did very specially deeds. They have won gold medals in Special Olympics for Punjab
and the country.
Ambuja and Kila Raipur
Strength and Punjab are inseparable. Passion and spirit make Punjab very special. For Ambuja, too, strength is second nature – strong cement builds strong homes. Strong people build strong
organizations. Ambuja is built on these beliefs. Ambuja thus identifies with the spirit of Punjab – its faith in its own abilities, its faith in its strong traditions.
Kila Raipur is a celebration of the strong and solid traditions of Punjab – its passion and its zest
for life. Ambuja Cement finds it a perfect platform to declare –
